I'm a wife, mother and artist. Creation takes on many forms for me and I try to embrace them all. I love to see others discover creation in their own form for their own life. It's in us all the power to create, we just have to let it out.

a 50′s wife

Lately I have been struggling with balancing my ambition as an artist and motherhood.  If I were a house wife in the 50′s would I still have this need to create?  I think many women back then used all their domestic duties as an expression of creation.  Today housewifery is a lost art to the detriment of many husbands and children (including my own).  Society  has come along way since then in many good ways.  But sometimes I think, were families happier as a whole back then?  When everyones role is clearly defined, things seem to run more smoothly.  Does order and meeting each others expectations create more happiness?

There are many things from the 50′s that I am happy to leave behind, however here are some of the things I am looking to try out:

cooking dinner almost every night

sprucing up before the hubby gets home

always looking presentable

wearing aprons

caring for clothes in an exceptional manor that in turn extends their life

buy more danish modern furniture (its a personal obsession)

I love that you are learning from the past. I was a 70's-80's housewife and learned to balance as I went along. It is a process!! Creating is part of every day. Enjoy!!!!

Em, I couldn't agree more. I have been watching MADMEN at your recommendation and can't help but feel that same. Thank you for bringing it to my attention again. Very cool! I will send this on to others!

I am sure I would not have survived as a 50's wife. I would not have been able to meet those standards and be a creative and fulfilled woman. I vote for progress even if it does make for some role confusion. I love the show mad men, but the lack of choices for women back then gives me a stomach ache….

Em, you are inspiring, I mean it. I'm lucky to be related to you because it is so fun to read what you write and see all your creations. You are so talented. I love the post on the 50's wife. I'm definitely not one of them. I don't even own an apron…anyway, it's fun to see your posts.
