We serve as the state of Utah's natural history museum located in the foothills above Salt Lake City. Our mission is to illuminate the natural world and the place of humans within it. We are home to over 1.2 million objects within the scientific categories of anthropology, geology, paleontology, botany, and other forms of biology. Contributors to the NHMU blog include scientists, naturalists, educators, program specialists, all of whom are moms or actively connected to kids in our community.

Make Noise with Dr. Noize!

This Saturday, the Museum is pleased to host Doctor Noize for an outdoor family concert! So who is Dr. Noize and why will this be a great way to spend time with your family??

Early last year, some of us parents who work at the Utah Museum of Natural History were introduced to Cory Cullinan, otherwise known as Doctor Noize.  We who have driven into work with the lyrical sounds of Dan Zanes and various Putumayo Playground CDs are always looking for something new to liven up the morning commute!  Dr. Noize is along the same lines of imaginitive lively and, ahem, noizy music that makes it fun to share a ride or an afternoon with young children.

The difference is that Dr. Noize has family who live here in Utah and was eager to perform his live show for local audiences! Last summer, the Museum team welcomed Dr. Noize and his Big Band of Whatchma Gadgetz for an outdoor family concert that included an appearance from our favorite frogs, Hipper and Hopper.

This summer, we are eager to present another songwriting workshop and family concert with Dr. Noize as part of our Year of the Dinosaur celebration.  Here are the plans for this Saturday, July 10:

  • At 1:30 p.m., kids aged 4 – 12 can join Dr. Noize in a highly-interactive songwriting workshop.  They will work together, using the Big Band musical toyz, to create a dinosaur themed song!
  • At 3:00 p.m., we’ll take our new museum theater piece, The Dino Show: Live from Laramidia, to the outdoor stage for the first time ever.  The whole family will want be join in the fun as we welcome our 10-foot ceratopsian dinosaur puppet for a special outdoor performance.
  • Then, at 3:30 p.m., Dr. Noize comes back to the stage for a lively family concert, which will include the world debut of the song written by the kids earlier in the day!

All of this is included in regular Museum admission and you can download a coupon to get $1.00 off each family member!

When he’s not performing as Dr. Noize, Cory Cullinan leads an entire enterprise dedicated to bringing the same creativity and humor to the world that his family gave to him.  He has an incredible personal story that is inspirational and engaging.  Take a moment to learn more about Dr. Noize and you’ll realize this is the sort of creative, energetic and musical individual that you will want to spend time with at the Museum!

Hope to see you outdoors at the Museum this Saturday!
