$5 in my purse and still saved money!

I was just informed at 2:00 p.m. today that I need to bring a salad to a dinner tonight. We were invited a few days ago but the food assignments just got made. Don’t you love families who plan ahead?

I have been running around today taking kids from here to there and literally only had 5 minutes to run in the store to get the items. I only had $5 and some change in my purse and I had to get it right away. I ran into the grocery store (an Associated Foods store) and picked up 1 head of lettuce, 1 hothouse cucumber, 3 hothouse tomatoes, 1 package of carrot matchsticks and 1 package of croutons for $5.16. I normally would have purchased a package of salad mix (which includes the carrots), plum tomatoes, regular cucumbers and croutons. I priced those out and they would have cost me at least $3 more! Yes, I now have to chop tomatoes and lettuce but I did save time with the matchstick carrots.

I think the 10 minutes more it will take me to put the salad together was worth the $3 in savings…don’t you?
