Decluttering Series: Junk Drawers

We ALL have them, but how many do we have…. Junk Drawers…. I have 4. 1 in my bedroom, 1 in my office and 2 in my kitchen. Today was the day when my kids were actually playing nicely together so I tacked the junk drawer problem.

The kitchen & office were the easy drawers to clean out. I threw most of it away. Why did I have over 100 straws in the drawer again?? The real question is, Why do we keep this stuff? Will we really ever use the items we keep? The answer is NO. We spend so much time and money “Collecting” items that it makes our drawers full of “crap” that some drawers we can’t even open, am I right?

In this Decluttering series the challenge part of this is to stick with it. You’re going to actually see how much stuff you have, and how much savings you’re going to see this year by using up what you already have. Here is my best example of this…

Why do I have 4 sets of makeup brushes? This is over $100 in brushes. I won’t need to buy any brushes for about 5 years. Nice savings right there, I forgot I had them.

It is amazing how much stuff we can collect over the years. I have 6 Compact Mirrors, there still in the case, WHY do we do this to ourselves. We think we HAVE to have something when in reality, the money we used to buy that item we’ll never use could go towards paying down credit card debt, saving for a nice family vacation.

Here is the biggest tackle I had today… the bathroom cabinet, the bigger the cabinet, the more stuff you cram in there, well I was done with it so here it is before..

What is in here? A whole lot of stuff that I don’t use. So OUT it goes. I filled my little garbage can twice of items that were too old to use, broken, things I’ll never use again. It felt great to declutter this cabinet. You accumulate a lot of stuff with kids. Here is the end result of an hours worth of cleaning. I also deep cleaned and cloroxed everything.

It looks so nice & neat, wonder how long it will stay this way with kids….. as long as I keep up on it, it will look this way tomorrow **wink**

After cleaning everything out, I was able to actually see how many samples I had, toothbrushes, floss, & toothpaste from the denist, lotions from the pediatrician, so I went through and got my pen & dated all of the items so I knew when they would expire. I don’t need to buy any dental products for at least 4 years. Use up what your given. You’ll be amazed at the savings you have RIGHT IN YOUR DRAWERS. How many scentsy bars do you have? How much can I save this year with what I’ve found… over $500 NICE.

Utilize storage boxes. These 3 totes I was able to put in all the extra band-aids, medicines, lotions, and all the smaller sizes for traveling. I can fit them under my sink. It feels so good to be organized and have this little section done for the week. Start now and look at your junk drawers, see what you have inside of them, check the dates of all your items, use up what you need and get rid of the rest.

Get rid of any makeup 6 months or older. Older makeup can make you break out & dry up your skin, which means you’ll spend MORE money in lotions to fix the problem.

Get rid of any older medication. You can take your old medication to your pharmacy, tell them it’s out of date and they’ll destroy it for you.

It really is amazing how much money we have already spent in our junk drawers. Get in there dig them out, and see what you have, look what you don’t have to buy this year and save some money.

I cleaned out the junk drawer in my kitchen this week. There was an entire grocery sack of trash, and I found 4 rolls of Scotch tape, 2 rolls of packing tape, a hole punch that we thought was lost and an untold amount of stamps. Amazing.

I know huh.. its amazing what we keep in the junk drawers that we forget about. There’s a lot of hidden money that we spend that we don’t need to.
