January Movies

The following is a short list of movies our family enjoys watching during January.*

Trust me…

(Though of course you’ll want to check content first and judge accordingly for your family.  Rest assured that number three is an entirely family friendly film!)

1-  Rear Window

Why? Three reasons:

1- It’s a classic Hitchcock film starring Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly.  (This reason alone should suffice).

2- It’s a murder mystery and for some odd reason murder mysteries just seem perfect for cold weather.

3-  It’s set during a New York heat wave.  January is cold.  There is snow and ice and hot cocoa.  It’s somehow pleasant (in an albeit rather weird kinda way) to see people suffering in a heat wave sans air conditioning when you’re snuggled next to a cozy fire.

2-  The Day After Tomorrow

This is a disaster film.  Filled with, well….disaster.  Global warming has caused the planet to go bonkers and everything north of the equator is freezing.  It’s a new ice age and mankind will have to somehow adapt.

In addition to the aforementioned disaster it also has hope, budding teenage romance (admittedly this is somewhat of a negative), and wolves.

{I like wolves}.

It’s especially perfect for those nights as the wind howls and a blizzard blows wild around your house.  Try it and let me know what you think.

3-  Meet Me In St. Louis

Surely you’ve seen this?  If you haven’t then I fear your movie repertoire is sorely lacking and you should find and watch it immediately.

First off let me admit it is a musical.  And it stars Judy Garland.  And it’s set in turn of the nineteenth century St. Louis when that city is hosting the world’s fair.

I actually think of it as a Halloween Movie – though I refuse to tell you why till you’ve watched it.  (Though when you do you’ll no doubt figure it out for yourself.  Please do let me know).

It’s a great family film; funny, with likeable memorable characters.

The perfect film to enhance January and help begin your year on an optimistic, peaceful note.

{N.B.  Be sure and watch it after #2 – the disaster movie.  The latter is understandably bit depressing and the sight of Judy Garland wearing a Gibson Girl hairdo will cheer you immensely.}

Until then, may your tight jeans always slide on easy and every day be a blessing!

Happy viewing!
