Learn to Fly with Acro Yoga

Hello Beautiful!

Saturday was my first time trying Acro Yoga since I discovered it over 4 years ago.  I was doing a YouTube search of partner yoga for a class I was teaching and stumbled upon some AMAZING videos of people combining Yoga and Acrobatics together.  It was a beautiful fusion and I was entranced.  As I looked into it more and more I discovered that it was only on the East Coast and knew I would be hard pressed to get to a workshop so I channeled my energy elsewhere.

Just this year I discovered Acro Yoga is now right in my backyard…YAY!  I joined a Facebook Acro Yoga group that gets together weekly for ‘jam sessions’ in a local park.  Here is a picture of the one I’m most proud of….I mean is that REALLY me doing that?!?  I’ve seen pictures and videos, admired, oohed and awed that people could do such amazing things and here I am flying!Acro Yoga TodaysMama.com

 

I can’t take any credit though.  My base, (that’s what the person on the ground is called) Bryan Flanders, is an incredible instructor and he guided me through every step.  Below is a list of where you can join in some Acro Yoga Awesomeness!

  1.  April 5, 12, 19, 26, May 3 & 10 Time: 6:00pm – 7:30pm Acro Yoga Series FRIDAYS cost: $54 for the 6 week series, or a drop-in of $15. Location Prana Yoga.
  2. April 18th from 6 to 8PM  Intro to Partner Acro Yoga Class at South Davis Recreation Center, Free for members, $5 for non members.  http://www.southdavisrecreation.com/

  4.  There is the Salt Lake Acro Yogis Facebook page where most of the Salt Lake events are posted as well as Jam Sessions.

Some lessons I learned from my first session.

  • All the things I thought I knew about yoga are different when you’re upside-down and backwards.
  • Falling is part of the learning process.
  • Falling is actually kind of fun.
  • Fun does not describe Acro Yoga adequately.
  • Laughing is a GREAT abs exercise and a natural side effect of Acro Yoga.
  • Letting go of preconceived notions is a must (and part of yoga philosophy for a happier life)
  • Acro Yoga brings out the child in you (that’s a good thing)
  • Letting go of inhibitions makes for a better session.
  • Trust your base to support you and you will surpass what you thought was your limit.

I always tell my students that the lessons they learn on the mat apply to the rest of your life.  So taking the lessons above and applying them to my life they look like this:

  • Look at your life from a different angle to see things you never knew you would see.
  • Falling is part of the learning process.
  • Falling can be fun if you have the right attitude (think roller coasters…without the hills it wouldn’t be fun).
  • Fun doesn’t describe our life adequately.
  • Laughing is a GREAT abs workout so do it often.
  • Let go of preconceived notions…enough said.
  • Be more like a child and add elements of play and fun throughout your day.
  • Letting go of inhibitions makes for a less stressful life.
  • Trust in your support system (God, spirit, family, universe, etc.) and you will FAR surpass what you thought was your limit.
