Hi! I'm Karen, a stay at home mom and blogger. Mostly I write about the new foods and recipes I've been making at my house. I like nutella, avocados, muddy buddies, mushrooms, tomatoes, peaches, berries, beans and rice, dark chocolate, cilantro, peanut butter, fried eggs and a million other types of foods. Most of the time, I like to make really easy and simple recipes--that's why I use my slow cooker a lot! I hope you find my posts helpful! Please comment and let me know when you make one of my recipes!

Sensitive Ears? Try This Earring Trick!

Sponsored Recipe

sensitive ears earrings

My mom didn’t let me get my ears pieced until I was 18 years old.  So I feel like waiting that long really helped me to appreciate getting to wear earrings.  Now I wear them all the time!  Basically, if I’m leaving the house I wear earrings.

However, within the past year my ears started to get really sensitive.  I was super sad because even the earrings for sensitive ears started bugging me.  I kind of stumbled upon this little trick by accident and it has worked like a charm!  Now I wear whatever kind of earrings I want.

Just use vaseline.  Dip the pointy part of your earrings in the vaseline.  Then put them in your ears like normal.  The vaseline seems to coat the earrings and will prevent your ears from getting sore.

Awesome.

Hope you enjoy this trick as much as I do!

I do the same thing with triple antibiotic ointment! Works like a charm!

I will try this… I have used Vaseline on my daughter’s ears, and they still become sore. :( Thanks for the tip.

I use clear nail polish. I paint it on let it and let dry. I usually don’t have to do it again. Hope this helps.

do you think it would work with belly rings to I haven’t had my belly ring in for a while but everytime I put one in my belly button goes red and is sore like what ears do

    • Karen Petersen 05/15/2013 at 3:18 pm

probably! or use triple antibiotic ointment!

    • Emi 03/05/2015 at 3:32 am

Get a plastic ring for your belly. My sister had the same problem and she tried a plastic one and it didn’t get sore or red!!!

A better more permanent way is to use clear nail polish. I put a thin coat on any part of the earring that will touch my ear. So I can wear even the cheapest earrings without irritation or turning my ears green. Which is great, because I am always losing earrings, so I don’t like to spend much on them!

I’ll definitely try this. I have the same problem. Be careful with Neosporin. Using it too much can cause an allergy. especially if your skin is sensitive. I’m very prone to allergies and highly allergic to neosporin. Polysporin is ok, though. I guess it’s the neomycin.

Just now saw this on Pinterest and I’m going to give it a try. Thank you for sharing that bit of info. I’ve had problems with my ears for years and sometimes just stop wearing them all together. They itch, I rub, they swell and ooze!

Get a package of clear earring stoppers/backs if the are the open book type…my mom and I were always losing our earrings or having them come part way out, these are like a dollar for fifty or a hundred little clear stoppers, never have earrings fall out any more!

I am 65 yrs and have been using Vasaline since I got my ears pierced 50 yrs ago. It is THE best.

  19. melissa palmer 09/02/2014 at 5:39 am

I have always dipped my daughters earrings in newsprint
Totally helps fight any infection and keeps her sensitive ears from bleeding and oozing.

I also have an allergy to nickel, if I can’t find nickel free jewellery here in Australia, I paint with clear nail polish too. I have to use it on necklace clasps, watch strap buckles etc. There are quite a few shops selling nickel free now, otherwise sterling silver doesn’t cause problems as long as it is 925 sterling silver.

    • Linda 11/08/2014 at 3:31 pm

Try earrings from a company called Simply Wispers. I have worn these for over 20 years with no problem and I am very sensitive to nickel.

i have also had this problem, along with just not being able to get certain earrings to go in the hole. I have been using neosporin – it helps the earring to go in easily, and if there is some irritation the neosporin helps with that, too.

Thank you very much for the tip of using Vaseline. I have stopped wearing many earrings because of a problem with anything other then gold, or platinum.

  30. Great tip, thanks for sharing. For those using velar fingernail polish I would suggest you instead invest in a bottle of L’Protect. It looks like clear polish but is made specifically for coating your jewelry do you are not putting unnecessary Chemicals Contained In The Polish In Your Ears. Feel free to try my nickel and lead free line, Traci Lynn Fashion Jewelry.

I found I could wear even the cheapest earrings by coating the post or wire with clear nail polish. Keeps them from getting sore and itchy. This also works on the under side of bracelets or watches that turn your arms an ugly color.

  47. Ila 07/18/2015 at 1:21 pm

Try something called reaction block. You can get it online from a site called the earring doctor. You paint it on you earrings. Works great. Been using it for years.
