Camp Leo Fall 2013

Are you ready to warm up with another round of educational fall workshops as the temperature gets a little cooler outdoors? The countdown has begun to Fall Camps at the Leo. If you’re a budding chef, why not try “Kooky Cooking” for grades three through five, on Thursday Oct. 17 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Led by Brooklyn McNaughton, you’ll be the best of both worlds of science and food while exploring the science of cooking. You’ll even get to test the limits of culinary design by creating, plating, and serving your very own lab coat-worthy delights. Who wouldn’t want to make edible fake blood and learn how to create a root beer float? The cost is $55.

The same day, but for grades one and two, “Bubble Bubble, Toil and Trouble” will run from 12:30pm- 4:30pm. The leader of the camp will be Elly Baldwin. Think bubbles are just for baths? Think again! Pop on in and get carried away in the sweet, soapy, and sometimes strange world of bubbles. For example, have you ever wondered how a fish farts? After learning fun facts such as that, you can take a guided tour of our newest attraction, Spooky Science. The cost of this workshop is $30.

The next day, Friday, Oct. 18, there will be a “Mad Science: Magic in the Lab” workshop for grades three through five, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with Brooklyn. Whether you’re a Wizarding Whiz or a Science Sensation, you’ll love this captivating camp of magic, mystery, and Halloween lore. You will then be invited to make a trip through our Spooky Science exhibition. The cost of this workshop is $55. The same day for first and second graders, you’ll be taught to “Color at the Speed of Sound.” This is from 12:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m., will be run by Jeni Sage Sidwell, and is $30.

I spoke a little more to Brooklyn and asked her what she would say to parents, and kids who are thinking of getting involved?

“I’d say what you are waiting for!? I ‘camp’ think of any reason not to ‘fall’ for these workshops,” she said.

I asked her if she had one she was most excited about? “Aw man, this is a tough one, because they’re all so spectacular,” she said. “If I had to decide, though, I’d probably say I’m most excited for ‘Bubble Bubble, Toil and Trouble.’ It’s the first time we’ve offered this class and, well, what’s not to love about bubbles!?”
I also asked her what’s the best way for kids and parents to get the word out about these awesome workshops if they like the sound of them? “Believe it or not, these amazing camps are even more fun when you have a friend taking them with you, so be sure to share this info with your buddies,” she said.

All camps will be at The Leonardo, 209 E. 500 South, Salt Lake City. Don’t forget- registration and pre-payment required, space is limited, call 801.531.9800 ext. 131 or education@theleonardo.org. There is a ten per cent discount for Leonardo Members.
