We don’t always get big winters like this one. A sledding trip to Soldier Hollow is one way to make the most of it. It says, yes! Winter came in full force! And we did more than shovel snow!
What is Soldier Hollow?
Soldier Hollow boasts the longest snow tubing tracks in the state. At the top of the hill, there are five tracks to choose from. All tubing tracks are not made equal. The scariest (and most popular) seems to be the two tracks at the end of the row.
Where is it located?
2002 Soldier Hollow Dr, Midway, UT 84049
This is in Wasatch Mountain State Park. Travel time is about one hour from Salt Lake City.
How much does Soldier Hollow tubing cost?
$10 per two hour session for ages 3-6.
$20 per two hour session for ages 7 and up.
This is more affordable than skiing and even more affordable when you find a good Groupon or KSL deal. But beware of the fine print. Most online deals like this are not good on holidays or weekends, so you need to find a regular weekday where everyone can take the day off. Another huge advantage to a weekday trip is close parking and short lines. Soldier Hollow is very crowded on Saturday.
How do you get to the top of the hill?
A rope tow pulls you to the top of the hill while you sit inside your tube. To beat the line, there is an optional walk-yourself-up alongside the rope tow, but most of us take the leisurely road and wait for the rope.
What are the age requirements to tube at Soldier Hollow?
Age three is the minmum requirement to ride the rope tow, but there is free tube use on a small slope for those younger than three.
Note that there is no “lap sitting” down the hill, so your child needs to be brave enough to go it alone. You can “hook” your tubes together by holding on to each other’s tube ropes. This lets you go down in clusters or trains together. This week, I went to Soldier Hollow with a six and a seven year old. I was a little nervous, but there was no trouble. They were very independent and hardly needed my help at all.
Do I need reservations?
YES! Even on a regular, nothing going on Tuesday, Soldier Hollow will sell out. This is a good thing though–they do not oversell and make sure those who are there to tube get their money’s worth. Call ahead to reserve your slot. They run from 12:00 to 2:00, 2:00 to 4:00, 4:00 to 6:00 and 6:00 to 8:00.
What else should we do before we leave?
Print and fill out the Soldier Hollow release forms before you arrive. This saves a lot of time. Dress for skiing, but prepare to stuff a few layers inside the tube if you get too hot.
What should we do afterwards?
In my opinion, there are two places to eat after tubing at Soldier Hollow.
The first is Dairy Keen in Heber. It is fast food but there is nothing “chain” about it. They have earned “Best of State” awards for years and years. If you have time to eat inside, you can watch trains wind all around the restaurent.
The second choice is the Spin Cafe. It reminds me of Red Butte Cafe cuisine (the one on Foothill) and also is the recipient of many local “Best of” awards. This is more of a sit down restaurant with their own gelato in the lobby so you can order dessert for the road.
These awesome food options, however, are really a side note to this post. Even if you bring your own sandwiches, tubing at Soldier Hollow is an excellent winter adventure. We loved it.
