Utah is known for its family-friendly activities, and this time of year is definitely no exception! Below are my suggestions for 9 things to do with kids in Utah. You can read more information about the activities by clicking on the title.
During Winter, a small park in Midway is turned into a magical wonderland of ice castles and frozen tunnels. If your children enjoyed the movie “Frozen,” they will especially love walking through this Winter Wonderland, singing “Let It Go”! (My son even wore his Olaf shirt to see the Ice Castles!) View a short video to hear what kids are saying about the ice castles.
Ice skating is one of the most popular things to do with families in Utah. I think there’s something magical about an outdoor ice skating rink, but there are plenty of indoor rinks as well, and most of them are open year round.
The “Sacred Gifts” exhibit is now open at the BYU Museum of Art. This exhibit features paintings of Christ by beloved artists Carl Bloch, Heinrich Hofmann and Frans Schwartz. The works included in the exhibition, most of which have never been seen before in America, will be on loan to the BYU Museum of Art from churches and museums in Germany, Sweden, Denmark and New York. It is an all-new exhibit, with 20 beloved works of the Savior, plus 16 etchings. Tickets are FREE, but tickets are required and can be reserved on the Sacred Gifts website.
One of our favorite things to do with families in Utah this past year has been The Empress Theatre. They have a new show every month, and the majority of them are family-friendly. The Empress Theatre is a community theater in Magna, and is a great place to teach your kids the love of live theater. Stay tuned to Today’s Mama for reviews from us on their shows.
A great activity for families is to get out and enjoy the beautiful mountains that the Salt Lake valley has to offer. The historical pioneer trail hike in East Canyon is a great way to teach your children the history of Utah, and walk in the footsteps of those that came to settle the valley.
One of our favorite discoveries this past year was the Fairy Forest along the Mirror Lake Highway just East of Kamas. Hidden between a few trees a short walk into the forest, the Fairy Forest is filled with magical fairy houses, memorials to lost loved ones and fun creations by curious kids. This is one family activity that will become a treasured memory, and a place you will want to visit over and over again.
An adventure in Utah that not many people talk about is the Pony Express trail in Utah’s West desert. Most people stay away from the West desert because of the dirt road and lack of services, but you are missing out on a big part of Utah if you don’t explore the area at least once. Visit a Pet Cemetery, Pony Express stations, travel the Lincoln Highway and many more adventures waiting to be found. For more activities in that area, you can also read my post about rock collecting in Utah’s West desert.
Utah ranks 6th in the United Health Foundations annual health ranking of states, and part of that is because Utah residents have a long list of fun runs to participate in. A simple 5k is easy enough for families to participate in together. One of our favorite fun runs is the Pony Express Fun Run at Camp Floyd. More favorite fun runs to do with families in Utah are the Great Inflatable Race and The Color Run.
No artistic talent is required to create a masterpiece at Painting With A Twist. The instructor guides you step by step in creating your work of art, all while having fun and a time you will not forget. My kids loved their painting so much, we created a wall of art in our basement of paintings done there.
