I am new at baking, and I search for recipes all the time. Since I bake a lot for my family, I figured, why not bake for our dog. I know, baking for a dog may sound crazy. Well, why not? It’s easy and takes the same amount of time as baking cookies.
Since I like to create things, I searched around and I found a few healthy and easy options and took the basics of those and created my own. The first batch didn’t turn out very good. Depending on your elevation level, increase or decrease your flour.
Now, I know I didn’t have to make the biscuits into the dog bone shape, but I really wanted to. So I ordered them on Amazon, they’re nothing fancy but they turned out really cute. Your dog will love them even if they’re not in a dog bone shape.
Preheat oven at 350 and you’ll bake these for 30-40 minutes.
Start with 2 cups of whole wheat flour ( I ended up using 3 because they were really greasy, so add the other cup of flour at the end of the recipe if needed.) and 1/2 cup of corn meal. Mix together.
Chop up or grate 2 large carrots or 4 small carrots. I cut them up and put them in my blender to make a light chunky puree.
1/4 C Canola oil. (You can use Vegetable or Olive oil)
1 Tablespoon of Brown sugar
1/4 C water (add a little more if needed)
Mix everything together and then bake. For my first batch I cooked them for 20 minutes and they were not cooked all the way through. You want them cooked through. At the 30 minute mark they looked like there burnt but they really aren’t. Let them cool on the baking sheet.
Put them in a zip lock bag, or plastic container. It makes about 20-30 depending on the size of your cookie cutter. I had a glass jar that was empty so that is where our dogs treats will be.
This is a fun activity that your kids can do. I got everything out and then helped my boys with measuring and cracking the egg. But they mixed it and cut out the treats and put them on the cookie sheet. They LOVED helping mom.
