MacLean is a freak about peppermint flavored-anything, so I wanted to find some recipes the twins and I could make together. Given that my sons are just as likely to set the kitchen on fire as bake in it, I had to find some with a quick outcome and immediate gratification. Here’s my three favorites, see what you think:

White Chocolate Covered Oreo Cookies

1 package Oreo cookies–try to find the special Christmas ones with the red peppermint-flavored frosting.

6 ounces white chocolate

1 package peppermint sprinkles

Melt white chocolate.

Dip each Oreo in the white chocolate, then lay out on a paper towel or baking rack.

Sprinkle with peppermint sprinkles.

Let them cool for about 30 minutes.

Peppermint-Chocolate Marshmallows:

I made these for a sleigh ride where we entertained clients for the radio station. Some people used them as swizzle sticks for their hot cocoa and Schnapps, some just ate them outright like a lollipop. I myself prefer BOTH ways.

Here’s what I used…

First, I melted about half the bag of chocolate chips in the microwave.

It took me about 2 minutes (stirring every 30 seconds) to get it smooth and melted!

While that’s going on (or afterwards if you easily get distracted like me), you’ll want to put your marshmallows onto coffee straws or plastic “stir sticks”. I found the straws I used on the paper aisle at Walmart…next to regular straws and napkins and such. I think I paid $2-3 for a box of 250!

I put a sheet of wax paper (or parchment paper would do) onto a platter to get ready for the next step.

You’ll also need to get your “dips” ready. Crushed peppermint will be super yummy to make Peppermint Hot Chocolate, but you can also just use sprinkles. I used some of both!

Now, I didn’t get any actual pictures of dipping the marshmallows into chocolate, then sprinkles, because well…I just don’t have that many hands, or that much talent. Maybe one day I’ll figure out how others do it.

But…I ended up with a variety of Dipped Marshmallows!

Note… chill for about 10 minutes in the fridge before wrapping or the chocolate gets everywhere. Ask me how I know!

Thanks, Adventures in Savings!

If you’re feeling a little more ambitious (Editor’s note: or have children with an attention span longer than–”SQUIRREL!”) Try this one, sooooo good.

Harmons, Smiths and Maceys are all running case lot sales right now. This is the time to stock up on items you need. There are a few EXCELLENT deals:

Items at Smith’s to stock up on IF YOU NEED THEM:
* Libby’s Veggies 3/$1.00
* Spaghetti O’s $.50 (if you have a coupon, $.30)
* Kroger Flour
* Kroger Water
* Hunt’s Pudding
* Bumblebee Tuna
* Valley Fresh Canned Chicken
* Hunt’s Pasta Sauce
* Kroger Canned Beans

FYI: Canned goods will last for quite some time – 2 years minimum – and if you keep them in a cool, dry location, then they can last 5 years.

Look at the recipes you use on a regular basis (your Master Menu) and then compare it to the deals right now going on. Honestly the costs are pretty comparable at all three stores so whichever one is the closest to you will be the one to go to but Smith’s does have more to offer.

Though not all excellent deals, these are things I need so my list includes:
* Tomato Paste
* Tomato Sauce
* Mushrooms
* Ramen Noodles
* Cup of Noodles

Remember that depending how the cashier rings you up, you might be able to use coupons on items if they are available. If they ring up the total as 1 item as a case price, then you won’t be able to use individual coupons but if they ring them up at 24 @ $9.00 then you could. Spaghetti O’s is one item you might have coupons for as an example.

Remember that your price point is what is important here. It is not going to be cheaper to buy a case of ketchup if your family only goes through 2 bottles a year because you will waste the rest.

You could buy extra items, though, to give as gifts for newlyweds, college students (yeah, I am sending some to my college girl!) or even to give to the food bank.

Happy Shopping!

I sometimes avoid the stores when they are having free events but yesterday I decided to attend the BYU Pep Rally at Macey’s N. Orem store. My husband and 2 sons were there as well as we tried to win tickets to the first BYU home game. That didn’t happen but we did get dinner for $8 total – barbecue chicken (DELICIOUS!), potato salad, roll & drink. I thought it was worth the money.

We then played a beanbag toss game and each got 2 beanbags in and took home a free bag of Don Julio corn chips for a total of 4. Then they gave away Clover Club chips and 3 of us got one. So, for $8.00 I fed a family of 4 got 4 bags of corn chips & 3 bags of potato chips. Perfect for our BYU Football game watching pleasure!

Bottom line: When there are special events at the grocery store it might be worth the time and trouble to get there. You never know what you could get for free!

Exciting enough, yes, but in the Sunday paper there were coupons for $1.00 off of 3 cans of Libby’s vegetables! I got 27 cans for $.28!!!! Now, which one of those cans cost me $.02 instead of $.01!!!!

Now I have about 2 months’ worth of canned vegetables to add back into my Prepared Pantry! We had depleted our supply with the job layoff. Yes, you can get name brand items at GREAT prices when you scan the ads and add coupons!!!
