Local cloth diapering enthusiasts sponsor The Third Annual World-Record Setting “Great Cloth Diaper Change” International Event

Salt Lake City, Utah April 20, 2013 – The Salt Lake City area is an official host of an international cloth diaper changing event taking place on Saturday, April 20, 2013, two days before Earth Day. In its third year with over 256 sites in over 15 countries, The Great Cloth Diaper Change event will attempt to set a new Guinness World Record™ of the Most Cloth Diapers Changed in a 24 hour period and raise awareness to the many benefits of cloth diapering today. In 2012, cloth diapers were changed at exactly the same time around the world, which meant that in some parts of the globe the events were held in the middle of the night. In this event, everyone will be changing their cloth diaper at 11 a.m. local time, so it will become a wave heard around the world. Register right HERE!

“Each year billions of disposable diapers enter landfills where it takes hundreds of years for them to decompose, if ever,” says Heather McNamara, Executive Director of the Real Diaper Association. “Building off the success of last year’s event, we hope to show the entire world that cloth diapers are a real option for today’s modern families, particularly catching the eye of expecting and new parents who may be seeking more planet-friendly and affordable alternatives to disposable diapers.”

The event will take place at the Salt Lake Community College – Miller Campus beginning at 10:30 a.m. In addition to the Great Cloth Diaper Change world-recording setting activity, there will also fun family-friendly activities, vendor booths, sponsor tables, etc., beginning at 9 a.m. and lasting until 1 p.m.

Interesting facts about cloth diapers (see www.realdiaperassociation.org):

Families can save approximately $2500 over the time it takes to transition a child from diapers to being “potty trained”.

Instructions on most disposable diaper packages advise that all fecal matter should be deposited in the toilet before discarding, yet how often is a disposable diaper changed and the human waste is sent out to the landfill in the diaper?

Reusable cloth diapers are reused approximately 200 times before being turned into rags.

It is estimated to take about 250 – 500 years for a disposable diaper to decompose.

Disposable diapers are the third largest single consumer item in landfills, and represent about 4% of solid waste. In a house with a child in diapers, disposables make up 50% of household waste.

The Great Cloth Diaper Change: In its third year, The Great Cloth Diaper Change is an international initiative organized with the help of the nonprofit Real Diaper Association designed to show the world that cloth diapers are a real option for today’s families. The brainchild of Judy Aagard of Tiny Tots in California, Aagard says she came up with the idea in an effort to host a family event celebrating Earth Day. The Great Cloth Diaper Change has morphed into an exciting Guinness World Record™ event. Register HERE!

If you’ve tried doing your own baby’s imprints with those little kits, then you know what I’m talking about when I say it can be pretty difficult. They curl their little fingers and toes and you end up wasting the whole kit and throwing it away. Well, then I found Deena from Hands of Time and her work really amazed me! The imprints take a couple weeks before they are complete because they must be dried and fired and glazed and yada yada ya……let’s just leave it to Deena. What you end up with is a professional ceramic piece of art showing off your childs perfect little digits.

Deena will be coming to Honey Bump Maternity every month so you can have your keepsakes done, record baby’s growth, make them for gifts…..etc. Babies don’t stay little for long

The maxi skirts aren’t only awesome for non-pregnant ladies but would be perfect for pregnancy since they’re soft and fold over. Same goes for the skinny jeans.
I had the honor of hosting my best friend’s baby shower this past October and I was so excited because it had been quite a while since I’ve hosted one. You might want to try this idea out! It was very fun and inexpensive.

I bought little brown bags from the craft store, some spanish moss, and a bunch of Daffodil and Tulip bulbs. Since we’re in Utah, the perfect time to plant these bulbs is supposed to be October and November before the ground freezes. I don’t really have a green thumb but I love gardening! I folded the top of the bag, punched a hole through and tied with a little bit of raffia…tada! So cute.

Flower bulb

So, I thought these little bulbs made perfect party favors to celebrate the life of the little baby girl growing in my bestie’s belly because every year come Spring time, there would bloom a beautiful reminder

Having a baby on the way is, like, hard. Hard for lots of reasons, like that whole pregnancy thing. That’s hard. Or how about the anticipation factor? Combined with hormones? Hard. This being my 3rd rodeo into the whole pregnancy and giving birth thing, I’d like to think that experience is in my favor. But this time I have a newbie with me: my husband. This is his first pregnancy, his first birth, and his first rounds of sleepless nights.

And he isn’t like most men I’ve encountered in the father department. He wants to know everything and anything about pregnancy and babies. He has read all the books, gets his daily email from all the appropriate pregnancy websites, and has an entire folder dedicated to pregnancy and baby apps on his phone. He is way more in tune with my body than I ever have or care to be. It’s sort of cute, and borderline annoying. As we are nearing the end of the pregnancy, all the websites tell him everything that is a “must have” for a new baby. And if an “expert” gives it glowing reviews it ends up in our shopping cart.

Except, really?

Haven’t women been having babies for centuries upon centuries without all those “must haves”. (I do not include an epidural in that sarcastic category. That is not a “must have” that is a requirement. I am a total sissy when it comes to pain) Is it really a requirement to have a feeding pillow? With the additional cover? Wouldn’t a regular pillow, that say you were sleeping on work? Upcycle! Wipe warmers? Just blow on the wipe before changing that little one in the middle of the night. Having a cold wipe might actually keep that baby awake long enough to feed. Bottles really don’t need a drying rack taking up space on the counter, a dish towel works just as perfectly. Is an activity mat necessary or maybe just a blanket? The list goes on and on.

I’m sure that all of these “must haves” have a great purpose, and work wonders. But I don’t have enough closets to keep all that stuff, nor do I want to spend my budget on that. It’s a good thing my sweet husband thinks I have the most expertise in the baby department, otherwise we might end up with a lot of unnecessary items. And if experience gives me insight into anything, it’s that a newborn needs very little. A place to sleep, a car seat, some clothes, bottles, diapers, a few blankets and a lot of love and patience.

Why doesn’t anyone ever put “snuggles and kisses” on the “must have” list?

Many women hold on to their maternity clothing for a couple different reasons. Maybe it’s because another baby is in their future or maybe it’s for sentimental reasons. Sometimes it’s for a couple months, sometimes it’s years.

I kept a few items because I thought I would use them later and a part of me didn’t want to give it up. Well when baby number two came 6 years later, I unpacked the maternity clothes, took a glance, frowned and they went straight into the donation pile. Not only were they out of style but they didn’t even fit like they did with my last pregnancy! Because I own a maternity resale shop, here are the reasons I have found NOT to keep any of your maternity clothes:

1) You don’t know what season your next pregnancy will be in.

2) You don’t know what size you will be fitting the next time you’re pregnant. Maybe you go up or down a size or maybe you just carry your baby differently and your “oh so cute low panel jeans” are now putting some serious strain on your bladder.

3) Many moms have told me that they just don’t want to wear the same thing again. Let’s face it, a maternity collection is never as large as your non-maternity wardrobe and it gets old fast. Get something new-ish and in style!

4) Why keep it when you can sell them and get cash for some other important stuff (diapers comes to mind, preferably cute cloth ones

5) It’s nice to give to friends and family but do you have the same style and size?

6) If you hold on to it for too long they become out dated, no one else will want them including yourself.

So instead of packing up your maternity items that you think you MIGHT be able to use later; why not make room in your storage, get some cash or trade them in for baby stuff or nursing stuff? That’s the fun of resale!

Oh how I love watermelon! I love how cool, refreshing and sweet it is and my kids love it for all the same reasons. I wonder, is a love for food is hereditary? I loved to eat watermelon throughout my pregnancies. More during my first pregnancy because I was stuck in the HOT Texas summer heat in my last trimester (I looked like I swallowed the watermelon whole) but it always left me feeling full and hydrated Did you know that watermelon is 92% water?

Watermelon Balls

Aside from it’s yummy-ness and high water content, watermelon has a lot of health benefits. According to an article from Fit Pregnancy, watermelon has high levels of lycopene (more than found in tomatoes). It may also ease nausea, heartburn, and raise your skin’s SPF. No wonder it makes the perfect pregnancy snack.

Consuming foods high in lycopene has also shown to reduce your risk of developing preeclampsia during pregnancy based on a study by the “International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics”.

Vitamin C is also abundant in Watermelon. Vitamin C aids in iron absorbtion which is important for the nutrition of your placenta. It is also rich in antioxidants, how can something so sweet and delish be so good for you? Hey, I’m not gonna complain.

Every once in a while I meet pregnant woman who absolutely refuses to wear maternity clothes. I know what they’re thinking because I’ve been there before. When I was pregnant with my first, the only maternity clothes I was familiar with were the ones that my mother wore and I was definitely NOT wearing those baggy things. I think a part of me was vain and I wanted to be the mom with no stretch marks that could proudly say that I wore my regular clothes throughout my entire pregnancy because I was so skinny. Well 1,000 stretch marks later and with a second baby on the way, I was smarter, humbled, and uncomfortable to the point that I had to force myself not to wear my husbands sweats all day long. Here are a few tips on how you can enjoy your maternity wardrobe and love it.

Buy basics- Ruched side tops in solid colors. I can’t say enough about how wonderful these tops are. They show off the belly and slim down the rest of your body instead of creating the tent like silhouette we used to see years ago. This goes for cami’s as well. You can layer these items or wear them alone with cute accessories to get a different look each time. Also, a belly band should be a staple in every woman’s maternity wardrobe. Belly bands are wonderful because they allow you to wear your pre-pregnancy bottoms longer, they lengthen tops, help you transition back into your pre-pregnancy clothes after baby comes, and you can use them for nursing. Last, make sure you find an awesome pair of jeans or even two!

Get dolled up and accessorize- Even though you feel like staying in pajamas all day, put on a little make-up and fix your hair and it’ll really lift your spirits. Don’t forget to accessorize with cute headbands, necklaces, earrings, etc…you may not be wearing them for awhile after the baby comes once they realize they can easily grab them and EAT EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!

Shop second hand- I can’t stress how wonderful second hand shopping is. If you are one of those people that think second hand shopping is beneath you, think again! The resale industry is growing rapidly although I’ve been a huge fan since I was a little girl. Imagine finding a pair of $200 jeans for $60? Or if you don’t care for designer items, imagine finding a $30 pair for $10. You get the same item, same quality for less AND you’re saving clothing from the landfill. If you find a great resale shop like Honey Bump Maternity, not only can you find great items for less but you’ve also found a place to sell your items back afterwards.

Get items that fit now- Don’t purchase clothing that have tons of room for you to grow into. That just creates the baggy look we’re trying to avoid! Instead find items that look like they have more length to them and fabrics that have stretch. The same goes for maternity/nursing bras. Too loose and you don’t have enough support, too tight and you risk getting clogged ducts which can lead to an infection.

Pregnant women today are so lucky to have such a wide variety of maternity clothes to choose from. You can find many items that look just like your non-maternity clothes and if you haven’t tried maternity jeans on yet….you’re sooooo missing out.
